How to Extend Servo Electric Cylinder Service Life: Five Maintenance Strategies

Plan lubrication, alignment checks, inspection and duty-cycle review to support actuator service life.

In brief: Servo electric cylinder service life depends on load, screw and bearing ratings, alignment, lubrication, environment and duty cycle. Use the specific actuator manual for intervals and allowable operating conditions.

Servo electric cylinder service life: maintenance checks

1. Keep the operating load within the rated envelope

Record peak and continuous thrust, speed, acceleration, stroke and cycles per hour. A component that meets peak thrust may still exceed the motor’s thermal rating or the screw’s expected life during repetitive operation. Recheck sizing after process changes, added tooling or higher production rates. The selection guides explain the data to collect.

2. Maintain alignment and external guidance

Check mounting fasteners, base flatness, guide alignment and rod-end joints over the full stroke. Side loading or binding raises friction and accelerates screw and bearing wear. Correct the load path instead of masking a mechanical issue by raising drive torque limits.

3. Lubricate according to the model documentation

Use the lubricant type, quantity, location and interval specified for the exact actuator. Record the service date, operating hours or cycles and observed condition. More grease is not always better; incompatible lubricant or contamination can also damage components. Isolate hazardous energy before inspection and service.

4. Control contamination and temperature

Inspect seals, bellows, cable routing and ventilation appropriate to the installed model. Dust, liquid ingress and high ambient temperature can shorten component life. Do not assume every NEFEIT model shares the same ingress-protection rating; confirm it on the product datasheet and check the actual installation orientation and environment.

5. Trend condition indicators

Log motor current, cycle time, following error, temperature, noise and alarms under comparable loads. An upward trend can prompt inspection before a stoppage. Where sensors are available, use them as evidence rather than assuming that every cylinder includes built-in remote monitoring.

Inspection checklist

  • Check for loose fasteners, damaged guards, leaks or contamination.
  • Listen for unusual screw, bearing or coupling noise throughout travel.
  • Compare drive current and position error with the accepted baseline.
  • Confirm limit switches, home sensor and cable strain relief.
  • Record lubricant, quantity, date and reason for any corrective work.

If an alarm or abnormal motion appears, follow the troubleshooting guides and stop repeated resets until the cause is known. For a model-specific schedule, send NEFEIT the actuator model, duty cycle and environment.

Frequently asked questions

Is an electric cylinder maintenance-free?

No. The needed work varies by model and operating conditions, but periodic inspection and manufacturer-specified lubrication remain important.

Can a single fixed service interval apply to every installation?

No. Load, cycle rate, stroke and environment differ. Start with the product manual and revise the inspection plan using condition trends.
